SOLUTION FOCUSED BRIEF THERAPY (SFBT)

Solution-focused (Brief) Therapy is an evidenced based, goal-directed, future-focused therapy.  Minimization of emphasis on past failings, allows for focus on strengths and previous and future successes.   SFBT is considered to be a highly effective choice for treating psychological, behavioral and relational problems.

THE BASIC TENENTS OF SFBT ARE:

Solution focused Brief Therapy, Therapist Millburn NJ

  • Solution-building rather than problem-solving.
  • Therapeutic focus is on the client’s desired future rather then on past problems or current conflicts.
  • Encouragement to increase the frequency of current useful behaviors.
  • Use of “exceptions” (time when the problem could have occurred but didn’t) to construct solutions.
  • Therapists aid in finding alternatives to current undesired patterns of behavior, cognition and interaction that are within the clients’ repertoire.
  • The model assumes that solution behaviors already exist for clients.
  • Assertion that small increments of change lead to large increments of change.
  • The conversational skills required of the therapist to invite the client to build solutions are different from those needed to diagnose and treat client problems.
